CPAs for executors
For the decedent's final income tax return, the estate's income tax return (Form 1041) if it earns income during administration, and — for larger estates — the federal estate tax return (Form 706). State inheritance and estate taxes also vary.
What to look for
- Experience with fiduciary returns (Form 1041) and, ideally, estate tax returns (Form 706).
- Familiar with your state's inheritance or estate tax rules.
- Coordinates with the probate attorney on timing.
- Clear about fees up front.
Questions to ask
- How many estates do you handle each year?
- Will you prepare both the final 1040 and the 1041 (and 706 if needed)?
- Do you handle the state-level estate or inheritance tax filing?
- What's your fee — by return, hourly, or as a package?
