Appraisers for executors

When the estate needs a date-of-death valuation for tax or court filings, or when significant personal property (jewelry, art, business interests) needs an objective valuation.

What to look for

  • Accredited — USPAP-compliant for most appraisals; ASA, AAA, or ISA membership for personal property.
  • Specialized — real estate, business, jewelry/art, and equipment are different specialties.
  • Provides written reports that hold up to IRS or court scrutiny.
  • No conflict of interest with the realtor or estate-sale company.

Questions to ask

  • What's your typical fee — hourly, per item, or per report?
  • Are your reports USPAP-compliant and acceptable for IRS / court purposes?
  • How long until I have the report?
  • Can you provide a date-of-death valuation in addition to current value?
